Norman Mailer

O romance The Castle in the Forest (2008), de Norman Mailer, procura explicar as origens de Hitler. Mailer acredita que o líder nazi, ainda que não deixe de ser moralmente responsável pelos seus crimes, poderá ter sido manipulado por forças demoníacas. É uma possibilidade extraordinária, mas não deixa de ser historicamente rigorosa ou relevante. O trabalho dos historiadores não consiste apenas numa síntese de factos particulares, mas também na concepção de hipóteses que expliquem as relações, nem sempre evidentes ou verificáveis, entre esses factos. Este carácter hipotético aproxima romance e história, conforme sublinhou o próprio Norman Mailer: «If the novel is good enough, in the end what is created is a mental reality that is very useful for others to contemplate when they’re reading history. In other words, it’s almost as if this is not the way it happened, but keep this in your mind when you’re reading about what did happen, because it may offer insights that you wouldn’t have just by sticking to the facts.»
